How does the DMV points system work?
Wisconsin's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) uses a points system to assess each driver's driving privileges. When a person accumulates 12 or more points on a driving record within a 12 month period, his or her driver's license will be suspended for two months. Additionally, a person's insurance rates can increase significantly. Each speeding ticket carries a certain number of points as follows:
- Two points: defective speedometer in vehicle
- Three points: over speed limit by 1 to 10 mph
- Four points: over speed limit by 11 to 19 mph
- Six points: over speed limit by 20 mph or more
You can see that if an individual received one excessive speed violation of 20 mph and another within a year's time, his or her license would be suspended. With help from our firm, you can have the charges reduced or dismissed, keep points off your driving record and maintain your driver's license.
